Umbra Inversion/information presented
at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 2002
The piece was commissioned as part of SFMOMA "Seventh Art Series"
in Celebration of 40 years of the Cinematographic Image.
In 'Umbra Inversions/ information" we used a film projector's flickering
light to illuminate a passage way wall similar in dimension to
the aspect ratio of the 16mm frame. Using a low-resolution digital camera,
focused on the wall, we were able to capture images
of people’s shadows as they passed through the light. Via wireless
transmission, the captured images were sent to a computer
on the other side of the room. The computer was running a video program
designed to respond to luminance density, triggering
the final step of the process. When participants' shadows registered
more than fifty percent of the frame's luminance, the image
of their shadow(s) was captured, inverted and printed as a still image
on a piece of paper. Participants were invited to take away
their shadow
projections.
